My 2 colleagues & I had a lot of fun yesterday (with loads of food to accompany us too!). We decided to have a ‘picnic’ in the office for lunch, minus the cloth to spread on the ground, the picnic basket, & the park…haha…it’s a high-tech picnic with the microwave oven, tables, chairs, & office facilities!

In the office that I’m undergoing my internship, I’m really blessed to have 2 friends of the same wave-length (pretty much same age)Β to join me in all the fun & laughter πŸ˜‰ We look forward to having more opportunities like this, but sadly En will be leaving us tomorrow! 😦 She’ll be done with her 2-months at this office, while I have another 4 months to go. Steph is a Junior with the company, so she has a long way more to go!

3 more lessons learnt

This will be a short self-explainable post on the experience on the Rapid KL Bus & the LRT:

  1. Never bother sitting down in the LRT during peak hours. You’ll end up having your face extremely near to someone’s backside (either front or back!!) & it’s just too dangerous to have your face right in front of someone’s behind. You may just end up having to smell something ‘fresh from the oven!’ or just have an unsightly picture to stare at throughout your journey on the bus/train. (“Excuse me, can you pls get your ***/**** off my face??”)
  2. The Ambi Pur fragrance is widely available in the public transportations.We just don’t call it Ambi Pur; we call it Armpit Pure! πŸ˜› *eeuuww*
  3. Don’t stand face to face with anyone when you’re on a public transport. One of the first smells you may get to experience in the bus/ LRT is the smell of ‘morning breath’ when people yawn without closing their mouth!! *faints*

This post is a lightbulb moment from my sister as she experienced all 3 of the above yesterday! *rofl* I laughed ’til I couldn’t concentrate on driving while on the way to pick my dad from work! *lol* You just need a little imagination & a comical voice (like my sister’s) to make everything sound laughable πŸ˜‰ Oh yeah, this post is not meant to mock anyone; it’s just for laughs πŸ˜›

Dinner at Restoran Malaysia, Kajang

This shall be the final post for the Saturday (23rd June 2007) outing! *yay!* The 6 of us, minus Ruth, who had some other appointment, went to Kajang for some authentic satay & Chinese food.

We had dinner at one of the older outlets where Kajang folks will recommend for good satay (skewered meat). The variety of satay available at that place are chicken, beef, duck, rabbit, & fish!! We also had BBQ chicken wings, ‘tai chao’ – Hokkien mee (thumb up), wat tan hor (Cantonese style fried kuey teow), & man yee mee (stewed yee mee) etc.

The Greatest Tourism Carnival ’07

On the same day, Saturday, 23 June 2007, we went to the International Tourism Carnival 2007. The carnival was packed with people, even in the late evening. Below are details and snapshots taken at the carnival.

We received this when we signed up for a tour package during the fair. The package is just RM168 per person for a 3 days 2 nights stay at Langkasuka Hotel Langkawi (quad sharing basis), island hopping, 3 days standard car rental, cable car and entrance ticket to Underwater World Langkawi.


We heard that there’ll be another Tourism Fair in August/September! This next travel Fair will be the MATTA International Travel Fair 2, scheduled to run from 6th-9th September 2007. We’re planning to go for the upcoming fair too! πŸ˜€ We’ll cover the event if we get the chance to go for it πŸ˜‰

Pizza Hut Lunch

As promised yesterday, here is the post on our Pizza Hut lunch. The ambiance at Pizza Hut Suria KLCC, smacked right in the middle of town (i.e. Suria KLCC shopping mall), & located on the concourse level of the mall, gives a very special ‘feeling’ to all its patrons who dine in its space.

The restaurant is dimly lit with ‘orange’ lights to give a cozy dining atmosphere for individuals, family, & friends. You’ll rarely get to see chandeliers in fast food restaurants, trust me. But for this Pizza Hut outlet, it has not only one, but SEVERAL chandeliers.

The 7 of us took the opportunity to make ourselves comfortable on the padded-seats (sofa) amongst the pretty packed restaurant at 3 p.m. No kidding, even at 3 p.m, there is still a sardine-packed crowd and more people thronging in!! We decided to take the Flaming Sambal Combo 2, a newly introduced pizza flavor in Malaysia & the Anniversary Meal 3. The prices of meals at KLCC is slightly more pricey as compared to the other outlets (around RM2 more), but the quality given in terms of restaurant ambiance and food quality is worth the price paid πŸ™‚

Sambal is a Malaysian delicacy. There are many types of sambal, but I believe that the one used for the pizza is the Sambal Tumis with Ikan Bilis (anchovies). This sambal comprises of chilli fried with belacan shrimp paste, onions, garlic, & tamarind juice. (Wikipedia,2007) The sambal paste is spread on top of the pizza with anchovies, chopped onions, green pepper, tomatoes, and some cheese strewn over it for the authentic pizza taste. The pizza is thin crust & is crunchy (the fried anchovies gives the pizza an extra crunchy feel).

Why we love Malaysia! ;)

The weekend was good πŸ™‚ Met up with Anne for the International Beauty Expo in the KL Convention Center. We only managed to spend half the afternoon together as I had another appointment later in the evening. The expo wasn’t a big hoo-ha as we expected it to be. It’s only the name that says it is international, but somehow there wasn’t anything that was really appealing to us.

The expo was held from the 21st-24th June 2007 at the KL Convention Center. Each visitor gets a goody bag upon registering, but other than that, there wasn’t much of freebies or samples to make a girl squeal for delight.

Nevertheless, it was great meeting up again & we had a late lunch with some other friends at the KLCC Pizza Hut. There were about 7 of us, a mixture of guys and girls. I was quite excited as the range in the KLCC Pizza Hut is slightly different compared to the other Pizza Hut outlets that I’ve been to. More on the Pizza Hut post will be up tomorrow! πŸ˜‰

Today started off pretty ‘excitingly’. Miss Wong’s definition of ‘exciting’ varies from north to south πŸ˜›

I learnt more about Malaysia today. I reckon, taking the bus & train to work really opens your eyes (and all your senses too!!) *giggles*

Lesson #1
It’s good to be taller than the average, especially if you’re a frequent bus/train traveler. Why? Cos it’s usually jammed packed in public transportations! If you’re taller than the rest, you’ll stand a chance to survive. There’ll be some space for you to breathe (up there) while those who are sadly not-so-tall gasp for air amongst the many bodies, armpits, and chests *totally eeeuwy!*

Lesson #2
Malaysians truly stand firm on the “Malaysia Boleh” spirit! I’m quite proud of that fact πŸ˜‰ (erm…i can’t be too happy ’bout it all the time…hahaha) The Light Rail Transit (LRT) is pretty much the most efficient mode of public transportation to get from Petaling Jaya to Kuala Lumpur. It takes about 4 minutes during peak hours to hop onto a train as compared to 15 min to get onto a bus.

However, every ‘efficient’ things would come with a price to pay! The train is already TERRIBLY PACKED (as in body to body!!) and at every stop, people can still push their way through every teenie-weenie space that’s available. For a person who is about 28 inches waist line to get into a 30 cm space (just giving a scenario comparison. it is not meant not mock anyone’s size or anything like that) among the many people, WHOA, incredibly a “Malaysia Boleh” event!!

Lesson #3
Oh yeah. Never sit in the bus & have someone WAY tall standing in front of you with his/her back facing you. I witnessed something which tickled my funny-bone this morning while I was on the Rapid KL bus to work. The bus took quite a lot of passengers at the time when I was on it…around 8.20 a.m.

There was this lady who wanted to get down the bus. She stood up (behind the tall man) and said,“Excuse me.”, but the man didn’t even move an inch. She said it again, but I guess her soft voices couldn’t cause enough sound vibration/waves to travel to his ear. *lol* By that time, I was already quite amused at the scene. Yes yes, I get easily amused alright. I guess she didn’t dare to touch that tall guy, but she had to in the end. Hahaha. She tapped his shoulder softly & said “Excuse me” for the 3rd time, & yeah, he finally moved. *rofl* It was quite funny. Everyone in the bus was watching. That blur tall guy didn’t even move an inch & I reckon he couldn’t even hear anyone speaking to him! I wonder if he had his ears plugged up or it’s just that he’s too tall!! Heeheeheeheehee…

One of the best Msian food blogs???

I was flabbergasted to find out that this blog was reviewed as one of the best Msian food blogs by an English! The blogger is originally from central Massachusetts but have lived in New York City for the past 15 years. Hahaha *rofl* I’m still in a state of shock that this co-founded blog have such support! *yay*cheers*

Introducing: Breadfruit!

What bread? Or what fruit…?? Is it a type of bread or is it a fruit?? That was my initial response when my friend, Nathaniel, asked if I’ve had it before πŸ˜€ “Huh?? What??!! What is that??!”

The scientific name for this FRUIT (yes, it’s a fruit) is Artocarpus atilis. To me, it looks like a round version of a jack fruit [nangka in Malay] & taste slightly creamy. No, it doesn’t look like a jack fruit on the inside. This fruit tree can be found in the Malay Peninsula of Malaysia, Western Pacific islands, & tropical countries.

According to the Breadfruit Institute of the National Tropical Botanical Garden founded in 2002 (they actually have a Breadfruit Institute!!!), Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a member of the Moraceae (fig) family. This handsome evergreen tree originated in the South Pacific and is now found throughout the tropics. Maturing at 15 to 20 meters tall or greater it can produce fruits for 50 years or more. The massive trunk may attain a 2 to 3 meter girth and depending on the variety; it either slightly flares at the base or forms narrow buttresses. The luxurious foliage consists of large, glossy dark-green leaves that range from entire to deeply dissected. Fruits are usually round, oval, or elongate and weigh from 0.25 to 5.5 kg. The creamy white or pale yellow flesh, when roasted, is said to have the texture and fragrance of fresh baked bread, giving the tree its name. Breadfruit is usually seedless but there are also many varieties with seeds.

Wikipedia adds, they are very rich in starch, and before being eaten they are roasted, baked, fried, or boiled. When cooked the taste is described as potato-like, or similar to fresh baked bread (hence the name).

I’ve eaten the fried version before, but I can’t recall where I ate that. Hahaha. To me it tasted like the fried sweet potato, but it’s actually breadfruit. It is sold at the Malay roadside stalls that sell fried sweet potato, fried yam, fried banana fritters, fried prawn cracker, and everything else fried lah. πŸ˜€

Unpleasant job & strange responses

I have to do one of the most common jobs as an intern…not that I have nothing else better to do, but the company needed help. Bah. Nope, I’m not a paper feeder nor am I the coffee-girl. I was asked to carry out a short telephone-based survey on the usage of handphones among the people in Malaysia. Bleagh. It’s not a task within my job scope, but what to do?

This job can be really, really frustrating & hilarious at times. Below are the various responses that my friend & I encountered πŸ™‚ Hope you’ll enjoy a laugh or two or even smile in agreement as I share this with u! Note: my ‘clients’ are not as funny as my colleague’s πŸ˜› “Malaysia- truly Asia!”

Scenario #1
Ruth:Good morning. May I speak to <name> pls?
Ruth: Sir/Maam, this is Miss Wong calling from <companyname>. We’re currently running a short survey of 5 questions on the usage of handphones among Malaysians. Could you please spare some time for this survey?
Respondent:Er…wo bu ming bai la…ni ke yi jiang hua yu mah?
Ruth: *gulp* Er…ok… (starts speaking in broken bare & minimal standard mandarin)

Startled & flabbergasted, I hung up & burst into mad laughter! *rofl* πŸ˜€ The first thing we as telephone surveyors get is the variety of handphone tones that our public has. Hahaha…*shakes head* When I encounter such ring tones, I just have to hang up first & call again… *lol*Can’t imagine the taste & humor that people have πŸ˜› Anyone for Hong Kong food?? πŸ˜‰

‘Chang’ Festival

The Chinese Dumpling Festival falls on the 5th day in the 5th month of the Lunar calander (tomorrow, 19 June 2007). According to my younger sister, who claims that it’s according to history, this festival came about because of a general. There was this general who was trapped in an enemy’s campsite. The general’s daughter wanted to pass him a message (emperor’s instructions) to help him escape, so the message was placed in the dumpling called the ‘chang’ (Hokkien), a triangle-shaped glutinous rice dumpling. In the end, the general’s army won over their enemy because of that important message given to the general to free him. Thus, this Chinese Dumpling Festival is held in remembrance of the historical impact that changed the history of China forever πŸ™‚

This one’s made by my aunt, who made a lot of chang for the whole family πŸ˜› Inside the ‘chang’ are treasures to devour! Muahaha… there’s a piece of ‘sam chang bak’ (3-layer pork/ pork belly), chestnut, dried shrimp, black mushroom slices, & mung beans.Β  Some ba-chang (meat glutinous rice dumpling) will have the salted egg yoke, which is oolala… πŸ˜› these chang is usually sold at the wet markets and even at roadside stalls. It is usually non-halal, but the market has already opened its business to cater to those who eat halal food as well πŸ™‚ You can find the halal chang at shops in shopping complexes! I believe inside the chang is chicken or maybe beef instead of pork πŸ™‚ Prices range from RM1.70 to RM3.50 or more, depending on the variety of filling inside the dumpling πŸ˜‰


My family often take these festive opportunities to gather the entire family together (family plus family friends). Each time, we’ll have dinner pot-luck style where each family brings one dish to the host house, which is usually my grandpa’s house. I have 4 uncles & 3 aunts, so there’ll be around 21 people each time we have dinner together. Not too big a family, but big enough to fill the whole house & give a merry-feeling to its surroundings πŸ™‚ We had the Chang Festival dinner yesterday, Sunday, since everyone is free on weekends.

Each time, we have around 8 dishes, but for yesterday, we had 11 dishes, inclusive of a soup (old cucumber & pork soup*). Here’s to share with everyone the dishes that we had for the dinner. The photos may not be of best quality since it’s taken with my sister’s camera phone, but it does still make one’s mouth water πŸ˜›

1. Mixed vegetables: Red capsicum, brocolli, siew-pak-choy, baby corn, & oyster sauce

6. Char yoke: fried pork slices (thick) marinated with red preserved beancurd, black sauce, rice wine (i think), & definately 5-spice powder, & later cooked with black fungus. Best to cook overnight for better flavour! *
